Have you ever heard of the Kessels Music Instrument Factory that used to exist in Tilburg?
Did you know that Kessels made many every instrument found in a symphony orchestra?
Did you know that Kessels instruments had international fame and clientele?
Did you know they made more than a half million instruments from 1886 – 1955?

You probably answered “no” to all of the above questions! Fortunately, the at the Kessels museum you can learn about this fascinating and unexpected piece of Tilburg’s history. TIC has planned a tour to this gem of a museum where members will learn about the history of the Music Instrument Factory, which produced everything from piccolo and violin, to tuba and pianola!

While this is not a specific TICkids event, the small scale and hands on nature of the museum make it a fun outing for children as well.  We will start with coffee/tea/juice with a 15 minute presentation on the background and history of the factory and Mathieu Kessels, the innovative factory owner. Then we will tour the numerous rooms of the museum, many with the actual machines used in the production of the instruments.

A knowledgeable guide will explain how instruments were produced and also tell us about the musical past of Tilburg with its many Harmonies and Fanfares.  There are hundreds of Kessels Instruments on display! The children can stay with the group, or go to a kid’s room filled with special instruments that they can play! There’s a xylophone, drums, funny wind instruments and a line-up of hanging bottles filled with differing amounts of water to tap!

Hope you can join us!
