Gone Girl discussion

4 April 2013

review by Farrah Ritter

At our last book club meeting, six of us discussed the thriller “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn at Anne’s home in Tilburg.
Gone Girl
“Gone Girl” is the story of a husband and wife told in different perspectives of the disappearance of Amy, the wife of Nick. Their marriage, and Amy’s disappearance, isn’t what it seems as the reader soon learns.
We had an enjoyable time discussing the mental  game this book played out. Everyone came to the conclusion that the ending left us with more questions (and indignation) as to what happened after the final chapter.
So as not to give much away, it’s best to go into this novel guessing. There are parts that make you wonder what all the fuss is about concerning its popularity, but the author does a masterful job of doling out just enough information to keep you going and guessing as the storyline progresses.
Overall, the group liked the book, if not the story that is told and recommended for those who enjoy a good mystery and characters you can’t exactly trust. I recommended this book as well as the two other novels by Flynn- “Dark Places” and “Sharp Objects,” both of which are interesting, different and you’re never exactly sure what the zinger might be until it hits you in the face.
We’ll be discussing our next famous and controversial book, “Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie on 29 May.  We hope you’ll join us for, what will surely be, another entertaining discussion.
